“June” was my Senior Thesis Film while attending Webster University. During my college career I focussed my education on equal and realistic representation of women in the media. My sister, Korryn, and I wrote "June" together and agreed it was important to showcase a main character who was so rarely seen in media, and not often given the opportunity to play a lead role. Women in film are so easily tossed away after a certain age and replaced by younger, attractive actresses, while most male actors often have a long successful career, never having their age questioned.
Growing up with today’s high level of media saturation, I was greatly influenced by the impossible female standards perpetuated by the media, and at a young age had an irrational fear of aging, which largely influenced the storyline of this film. United States media is the largest influence towards societal constructs and norms, and I believe if we changed the way people are portrayed in the media, we will see progress in our real life, but in order to fix this, minorities need to be working in all aspects of production.
